Well, if a clear majority of Americans wanting us out of Iraq isn't enough to rip Bush's grip off the trigger, about a majority of Iraqis?

Andy, Welcome, Welcome USA Is that as in "welcomed as liberators"? The South is hardly a good example. And to tell the truth, I don't always believe we should do as the majority says in every situation. But it's becoming clear that we're not welcome in Iraq, even by moderates. We blew this big time. The ivasion of Iraq and the necon strategy to deal with the Muslim world will go down as one of the most disastrous foreign policies in decades.
The challenge is to extricate ourselves and then throw the neo-cons' strategy out the window. We've got to focus on the next generation. If we can prove to moderate Muslims we are sympathetic to their just grievances, they can help stem the tide within their own societies and perhaps their children won't grow up to be terrorists.

The last time we listened to the majority where we were occupying we decided to pull our troops out of the South. The predictable result was widespread terrorism against Blacks and any other progressive thinking people. The disenfranchisement lasted for a horrible century. I also think we should invade Sudan to save Darfur, and I am not about to listen to Sudanese people as a whole. Instead I will listen to the Darfurians who are chanting Welcome, Welcome USA. It is the fundamental tenant of liberal thought that we stand up to the majority when it oppresses the minority.

I'm one who thinks that getting out Iraq ASAP is probably not a good idea for the wider war against jihadists. But if such a wide majority of the populace wants our troops out (we'll see if these polls are borne out, I guess), I don't see how we can say no and claim we're trying to bring them control of their own country.
