What Party?

E. J. Dionne observes the irony of our political parties.

Republicans, who defend individualism in theory, act like communitarians where their party is concerned. Democrats claim to be more community-minded but act like radical individualists in their penchant for candidate-centered, one-cause-at-a-time politics.

I think we need to keep in mind that even if the Dems won both houses, rather unlikely at this point, they will highlight Bush's bad policies but won't be able to pass much. The challenge will be to articulate a true alternative for '08 when they have a chance at real power.

President Chairman Dean's approach is, without question, in the best long term iterest of the party. I wonder, however, if this might be the worst possible election cycle to stick to it.
