Brian

I'd say that you're pretty much right on target here, Bob. I have a fair amount of experience in this area and I'll share some of my thoughts. (Aren't I generous?)

I get the emails from the WH that you refer to - at least one every biz day. They send out their take on events every morning and often they either highlight reporting/writing they like or attack/rebut what they dislike. I've gotten plenty more than 32 in the time you reference. That number must only take their "Setting the Record Straight" emails. I should also mention that I never signed up or requested any of them. I also seem to be getting more of them since Tony Snow came on board. They do an excellent job of framing issues - any host who wants to promote the WH line will have just about all the ammo he'll need if wants to use it. I sometimes find myself resenting the way they fill up my inbox, but I have to admire the effort.

If other hosts have the same experiences that I have, the reason that more conservatives are on the air is quite simple and straightforward. They WANT to be on the air more than Liberals do. I get a dozen or so pitches every week from Conservatives who to be guests on our show. Only one Liberal group makes regular pitches like that (and they make plenty.) This principle seems to hold for guests that I actively book as well. As an example, it is MUCH easier to book guests from the Heritage Foundation than it is to book guests from the Brookings Institute. I don't understand why liberals complain about not being heard on talk radio and then don't take advantage of the opportunities that they have. In fairness, I may lumping some people together when I shouldn't be doing that - but I think the point generally holds.

We have the Gov/LG/AG on our show pretty regularly. The AG and LG are on once/month and Gov Kaine is FAR easier to book than his predecessor was. The AG's office actually contacted us to secure a monthly spot and the LG took up our offer for the same immediately. The Gov's office says they would be willing to have a regular segment, but two requests have gone unanswered. I still give the Gov high marks for easy booking and he's great on the air (so is the AG). The LG is not quite as good as the other two, but he is much better than he was a few years ago as a Senator and he seems to enjoy the interviews a great deal.

Finally , Liberals should quit whining about "fairness." Get better and the market should reward you. I must admit, however, that I don't understand why shows are reluctant to book guests whose views clash with those of (most) of their listeners. Those guests can make for very interesting/entertaining segments and that's what get you more listeners. For what it's worth, we have had more Liberal(ish) guests on and have tried to hit more local and state issues in the last few months. The result - our best ratings book since fall of 2004 and as far as I know we didn't have contentious Presidential election to help us out.

Whew.
