"If the Democrats can achieve a workable compromise position on subsidiary issues such as parental notification and late term abortions, I am convinced that abortion will be a winning issue for Democrats nationwide in the post Roe era."

I agree.

The right has been assured somehow that Roberts is "right" on life. Redstate.org, for example, says:

"We know that there will be times in the future when we will not agree with a decision or vote of Justice John Roberts, but we also know there are times in the present when we do not agree with Justice Scalia. There is much we do not know about John Roberts. There is also much we do not "officially know," but privately are sure of. We at RedState know Judge Roberts is right on life and is right for the Court."

However, Roberts is being set up to not disclose his position regarding Roe v. Wade. The obvious reason is that a majority of Americans oppose reveral of Roe v. Wade. It is interesting that there is even a 10 percent gap between people who call themselves "pro life" and people who want to overturn Roe. My feeling is that politically the Democrats would do best in making sure the country knows that Bush has nominated Roberts and the Republican Congress has confirmed him for the purpose of providing a vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, and then vote against him civilly and with a thousand praises and without any threat of filibuster based on a solemn commitment to defend the constitutional right to privacy. If the Democrats can achieve a workable compromise position on subsidiary issues such as parental notification and late term abortions, I am convinced that abortion will be a winning issue for Democrats nationwide in the post Roe era.
